Last week while training in NC, RAT-SAR participated in an active search for a 45 year-old subject at Dupont State Park in North Carolina. While the outcome was not what we hoped for, we were happy to support our search and rescue partners in North Carolina.
HCRU / RAT-SAR
April 21, 20121 – RAT-SAR signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit (HCRU) to provide mutual aid for search and rescue operations. HCRU has existed since 1955 and is one of the best equipped and capable cave rescue units in the country. The MOU will greatly expand the capabilities of both HCRU and RAT-SAR to respond to search and rescue events in North Alabama.
Awesome second weekend of FUNSAR for Fischer Rescue Squad, two members of Huntsville Search Dog Unit, and a couple of RAT-SAR members. Very strong teams with a lot of boots-on-the-ground experience with their respective teams. Special thanks to Corey Speegle and NW AL K9 for helping out with part of the class. If you ever get lost in Dekalb county or the Little River Canyon area, you’re in good hands with these sar techs. Strong work all!
February 21, 2021
Special thanks to the RAT-SAR members and NW Alabama K9 members who responded to the callout and search on Sunday. Your strong work and dedication to search and rescue is much appreciated.
Lawrence County in the News
Training Weekend and Search
Always a good time when Haywood SAR and RAT-SAR get together for a little bit of mountain training. This training weekend turned into a real mission when we all got woke up in our tents at 1 AM to assist with a missing person search in the southern part of the state.
ALEA Helicopter Training
Training day with ALEA Aviation, NW Alabama K9, Lawrence County Multi-Agency Search, and Rescue and RAT-SAR. K9/Handler lifts and patient extraction training from the state’s rescue Huey.
NCEM MSAR Awareness Course – January 8-10
RAT-SAR had a few students in the 2021 North Carolina Emergency Management MSAR (Mountain Search and Rescue) course. The weather was perfect with plenty of snow and cold air to expose the students to the rigors of working in cold, mountainous conditions.
SARTECH Certifications
RAT-SAR would like to congratulate the Lawrence County (AL) and Florence PD (AL) members (as well as a few RAT-SAR members) who passed their NASAR SARTECH II certification testing and evaluations this past weekend. Their respective agencies and the state of Alabama have gained a few more valuable resources. Good job all!
Search Dog Training
A rainy day training session yesterday with the Huntsville Search Dog Unit working their live find and human remains dogs. Great team and good training. Look forward to working with them in the future.
